When inspiration hits it's like a full force locomotive and I have to jump on that car because that train of thought is hot and I don't want to miss the next stop. I'll put my work aside for a few minutes to hash out a rough draft then go back to work.
However, that's not the reality of how I write. When an idea comes I have to write quickly. I usually go through a more realistic process like this.
I have to be in the mood. I have to be freshly awake and have checked my email to prep my brain for writing. Once I measure my work, I prioritize my tasks from the most important ones to the least and find time to write.
As I sit at my desk, with a glass of cold tea and a nice fluffy chair beneath me, I'll research a topic and brainstorm story angles I would approach it from. I would look up writing prompts and think of hooks to begin a story.
I would try to get into my audience's shoes and think about how I would approach a story from their perspective. This makes me think about their problems and how my story could solve them. I want to add value to the reader and people love to read relatable posts. So, I try to tailor my stories as much to them as possible.
Once, I'm done researching it's like a giant snowball that rolls downhill. My writing takes momentum itself and most of my stories just write themselves. You can read about my workflow here to see my thought process.
All in all, it's a pretty fun experience. I love writing new stories that resonate with the audience and the community on Medium is pretty supportive and encouraging as we read each other's work and leave constructive feedback that helps us mutually grow as writers.
I'm constantly inspired by other writers on Medium so that also helps keep me in the frame of mind to write.
Most times, I have to prep my brain to write something I'm proud of. Finding time in my busy schedule takes a little effort but it's something I don't mind doing because I love to do it. On occasion, I'll get a brilliant idea and charge through a draft so quickly it's hot for publication. However, that only happens on rare occasions and I let the story write itself.
