The Gift of Music is One of the Best Gifts You Can Give to Anyone
Music can be a soothing balm to the soul
As soon as winter break started I got into music again for some reason. I remembered I had a ukulele and thought it was a good time to brush up on my uke chords. It is similar to the guitar, at least in the way the frets are laid out so I have been happily playing easy songs with the major and minor chords I’ve brushed up on.
However, I still feel bored about the instruments I can play. I wanted to do something different so I found out about the Kalimba— a thumb piano with beautiful acoustics that sounds like your playing the wind chimes-- or the stars as I would say. It is complicated but very similar to the keyboard so I mentioned it to my dad and he gifted it to me for Christmas and I’m spending all my time learning classical tunes like Oceans (where feet may fail), La Vie en Rose, Can’t Help Falling in Love, and Fly Me to The Moon.
I definitely wasn't expecting to wake up to Dec 24 to a new keyboard. One family friend thought of me and blessed me with an updated keyboard that sounds so beautiful.
I had so many questions to the gifter who knows so much about music himself and thankfully accepted his advice to learn the circle of 4th and 5ths. I don't know much about music theory but I’ve been thinking a lot about composition that he answered some of my questions and I feel so much more encouraged.
I wasn’t expecting this semester break to take such a creative turn. The gift of music is so special and I expect to use what I’ve learned for beautiful worship songs that bring peace to my heart. The Kalimba has been so soothing and healing for the soul. I really enjoy the personal effort it takes to create melodies that seem so complicated but are really enjoyable to learn when you write down taba from visual YouTube tutorials that can enlighten you to your favorite songs. Its almost been a week and I’m half way through learning Oceans (where feet may fail) I hope to share it sometime on YouTube later since its such a great song for encouraging faith in difficult circumstances. it’s a song that has touched me in different moments of my life since it first came out.
Music can be such a great gift to give to anyone for musical therapy. You never know the types of songs that can help heal or sooth the hearts of the composers or listeners that receive the gift of music that flows through a musician’s heart. I’m so thankful to the investment that my dad and his friend gave to me this Christmas. This creative journey in this winter season has definitely been a healing one that I didn't expect to go on this way but I’m happy to have been taken down this path.
Merry Christmas to all and Happy New Year!
